Use of IDN Domains
-
Hi
I’m trying to learn some more about the concept of Internationalized Domain Namens (IDN) and would like to understand the limitations of WordPress on that matter. I am actually using an umlaut domain. The name of the domain is hannah-h?ch-schule.de which works fine if you enter that name in any current browser. The domain, however, is registered as https://www.xn--hannah-hch-schule-6zb.de which is a rather ugly name. That name should be translated into the umlaut domain and vice versa.
Unfortunately, there are still some programs that are not aware of internationalized domain names and I have the feeling that WordPress may have some issues with IDN as well.
In the settings dialogue of wordpress an umlaut domain is not accepted as a valid domain name. So I am forced to enter the ugly registered domain name. That in turn causes the ugly name to appear in the permalinks.
Does anybody have similar experiences and found a way around this? And if not, with the rising number of IDN, would it be worth to consider proper IDN handling as a feature request for an upcoming version?
And since we are into it: If I decide to change to a “standard” domain name, and buy another domain name that points to the same directory, can I simply change the domain name in the settings dialogue of WP or will that ruin existing posts in some way?
Thanks for your help.
Best regards,
Jens
