• From doing a bit of research it appears it is not permissible to use the term WordPress in an adwords ad, or is it?

If you type in google “wordpress tutorial” almost every one of the ads has the word “wordpress” in it.

If it is not permissible, why are all these advertisers able to do it?

    Tks

  • Hi!
Have you read the WP Trademark Policy? Basically, it needs to be analyzed on a case-per-case scenario. If advertisers are respecting the requirements, then no harm done.
Anyway, that is my opinion and I’m simply a regular user, so perhaps you should wait for an official response from a moderator.
    Cheers!

I would presume that the answer will be “No – you cannot” based on:

We do not allow the use of the trademark in advertising, including AdSense/AdWords.

in the page that Marventus linked to above. But please contact the WordPress Foundation directly about this for a definitive answer.

why are all these advertisers able to do it?

Bear in mind, it may not be the case that they are able to do it…. from an acceptable use policy

You will also see sites which use WordPress in their domain name … many of these sites are not approved to do so

Some folks simply do not follow the rules. It is up to the Foundation if they wish to take action. They certainly could – basically, members of the community who want to do the right thing follow the rules. Others do not. Action may or may not be taken – but don’t take the fact that you see people doing something as an indication that it is acceptable to do such things.

Amen, Reverend! ?? Also valid outside of WP if you ask me, hahaha.
