Use timestamp date as date only in loop

I’m trying to build some custom event listings using the Custom Content plugin and the calendar plugin we use (Tribe Events). The date fields in the Events are date/time, eg 2016-07-13 19:00:00. Is there a way I can compare dates in the loop using the date component only and exclude the time component? I want to distinguish between single day and multi day events, and [if field=enddate after=startdate] doesn’t work because the times are different so the result is always true. I can format the dates without the time, but that doesn’t affect the actual value for the comparison. I can’t change anything about the fields themselves.
