By default, there are no layers, each slide has a single slide image. You can use a custom slideshow template to add additional content and position that over the slide images, like this slideshow caption skin. But jQuery Cycle doesn’t have a tile slide transition like what you are describing, you would likely need a commercial slideshow plugin that includes this transition.
