Use XML instead of MySQL

I haven’t installed WordPress yet because I need a certain type of functionality. Searching the web doesn’t appear to reveal this as a discussion topic so I’m posting it now.

Is it possible to install WordPress in such a way that it uses XML files on the server instead of MySQL? The service provider doesn’t have MySQL, but has PHP… so I was thinking that XML files of a specific format structure could work instead.
