Useful plugin for displaying publications

  • Document Gallery is a useful plugin for the function it performs. I looked and did not find anything else as useful for displaying a document library.

    I did require support for the plugin when I upgraded and it was extremely prompt and helpful.

    I have 2 qualms with the plugin, neither of which are a deal-breaker for me.

    1) The documentation could be more clear. I couldn’t figure out how to use the media category to display posts but using the support forum I discovered that along with category=xyz I also have to include localpost=false or else no documents will appear. Fine, but where is the localpost parameter discussed?

    2) It would be nice if the feature to create a document gallery and insert it to the page also had something in the settings that would list the vraious document galleries and their contents. In other words, give us a way to see our catalog of galleries. This is a minor thing and maybe not something that could be done within the way the plugin works and I could easily live without it.

    All in all, I’m very happy to have found this plugin. Our organization publishes a monthly magazine and we like to put past issues on the site by year. Document Gallery is handling this nicely for us.

    #1 on your list is definitely in the works. We’ve been fighting the limitations of the on-site WP.org documentation options in trying to provide extensive documentation on all of the ever-growing features within DG, while also providing quick overviews of the various features. That said, there are definitely things we could do with the limitations we have, but that we have just not done so we’re planning to work on that in the coming months.

    #2 is an interesting idea. A bit tricky, as you noted. I’ll keep it in the back of my head.
