Hi, I’m sorry you feel that way. For many people the Free product can work fine since we actually have two formats included in the plugin – one is zip and the other is our custom format “DupArchive”.
In terms of limitations, we don’t limit the size of zips at all – if a zip package isn’t working or getting cut off, that would most likely be caused by CPU or memory limitations imposed by the host.
Regarding DupArchive we do limit this, because we think it is reasonable for a free product to provide the capability that a 500 MB site can be able to be bundled up, even on sites that typically are prevented from doing so by host limitations.
A quick background on DupArchive – we developed over the better part of a year after discovering that many budget hosts cut off zip creation before a package can get created. This caused a lot of frustration with people as you can imagine. DupArchive has features like retries so in the event a host cuts off the build, it attempts its best to resume and actually overcome host issues.
So we tried to strike a balance by providing no limits on the size on zips (we have no control over hosts though so if things get cut off, that is a host issue) and then DupArchive which has the ability to overcome those limitations.
Aside from all that, we do provide a technique that allows you to migrate a site of any size with Free, even if your host is cutting off the zip and your size is larger than 500MB. This technique is described here: https://snapcreek.com/duplicator/docs/quick-start#quick-060-q
