• I was considering looking at WP as a CMS, however it doesn’t seem like it has any sort of group or team concept out of the box.

For example, if we had 100 users writing content, is there a way to create groups (e.g. sales group, manager group, marketing group) so that users in the same group can edit each other’s content? Users should still be able to edit their own content, but not content outside of what they created, or outside of any groups they belong to.

If not, is there a widely used plugin that most people will recommend for this?

    Thanks.

  • Hi B-Rad

    Have you tried this?

Hey booleanbiker, yeah actually in my searching I did come across that plugin, but I wasn’t sure if a) I needed a plugin in case WP had some sort of group management built-in and b) if that plugin was the most used group management plugin in use today.

I’m actually a little shocked that WP doesn’t appear to have that kind of user control built-in. Am I right that without adding a plugin, users would need a role of something like Author or higher in order to edit someone else’s posts?

Hi, i am having the same problem….
did you found something that do the tricks?
I also tried groups plugin but i don’t think that this work as we need…

    Waiting ur answer
    Kind regards

I never found the solution I was looking for. The best that I’ve seen are role management plugins, but they’re still far away from what I wanted. Nothing at this point allows you to create internal groups or assign content to more than one person. Seems that for now, WP focuses on capabilities and that each user is defined by them. For example, you can give someone the ability to edit their own posts only, or everyone’s, but not get more fine grained than that. Baffles me how no solution exists for this yet.

    Hi thanks for ur answer..

I think that something like that can be achieved using Co-Author Plus

This plugin allow to insert “co-Author” and also co-authors can edit that articles.

I asked to the owner’s plugin if could be possible to assign the co-authors automatically based on the article’s creator roles…

this, i think, could be a solution!

I haven’t tested that plugin but from the description it looks like it just allows you to add the names of multiple users to a post, but it doesn’t seem to mention about restricting access to editing the posts to those users. Have you tried it?

    I tried it.

The author can insert on or more co-author and co-author will be able to edit content where he is co-author…so it is something like a group

I’ll check it out and see if it might be a solution. Little worried that it hasn’t been updated in over a year though.

Just tested the latest version on github and it seems to work rather well. I’m going to have to look into this deeper as it seems to be a great addition and will be very helpful. I like the fact that Automattic is involved with it and hopefully they’ll continue to be.

The only downside I can see is that there’s still no concept of creating groups of users, so everything has to be managed user-by-user. Just as an example, if you had 10 pages and needed to give each page 20 co-authors (a rare case no doubt), then you have to touch all 10 pages and add 20 authors to each page. However if you could create a group, you’d only need to visit the 10 pages and add a single group.

Hi, just a question what u mean with “automatic”?

I cannot see any automatic assignment of co-authors..

Automattic runs/own WordPress. See https://automattic.com/. And they’re listed as a contributor in the co-author plugin (https://github.com/Automattic/co-authors-plus). I didn’t mean to say any of the actions were ‘automatic’.

Hi, if u found a way in order to automastically assign co-author can u share it here?
    Many thanks!
