User has to republish twice after meeting conditions

I have been using this on a few blogs and some of the other authors have brought this to my attention. If you try to publish a page without a featured image, it will tell you it’s saved as a draft and that one is needed. That is as expected. However, when they then add an image that meets the requirements and try to publish, it updates the draft and the warning message remains. Only when they hit publish a second time does it actually accept and publish.
