    Here is what I want to do:

    A user registers, they can login, they can not post comments or do anything at all anywhere until I increase their user_level to 1.

    According to what I’ve read, this should be the default, but it is not working for me. It only seems to hold true when restricting new article posts but does not work in that the newly registered users can still comment on existing posts. Am I doing something wrong?

    My settings are as follows (x is checked, o is not):

    Options->General->Membership:
    x Anyone can register
    x Users must be registered and logged in to comment

    Options->Writing->Newly registered members:
    x Cannot write articles
    o May submit drafts for review
    o May publish articles

    Options->Discussion->Usual settings for an article:
    o Attempt to notify any Weblogs linked to from the article (slows down posting.)
    o Allow link notifications from other Weblogs (pingbacks and trackbacks.)
    o Allow people to post comments on the article

    Options->Discussion->Before a comment appears:
    o An administrator must approve the comment (regardless of any matches below)
    x Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
    o Comment author must have a previously approved comment

    Thanks in advance ??

    Why don’t you check either moderate comments or require a previously approved? Seems like then nothing would post unless you wanted it to, since you could not post anything from someone until you approved their first one and moved them up.

    Users with a user level of 0 should be able to freely comment on any posts.

    I’d use the ‘previously approved’ feature although I see this as becoming a headache with many users in the future.

    I’m looking to satisify both control as well as simplicity; I would rather not moderate comments from users unless that user has done something to require moderation. I’d much rather moderate their inital user registration request one time (ie. setting them from 0 to 1), then allow them work at will.

    Note that my web log will be religion-based which tends to spark a lot of controversy, and keeping the comments acceptable is absolutely necessary for the health of the forum.
