• I have had odd users registering for my site – using the META widget they can register – and several of them were emails attached to a website – in Asia. I don’t know what they could be gaining from registering for my site – perhaps creating a way ‘in’ to mine my data? But I’m only a photographer with a website and blog – and a link to subscribe to my newsletter.

SO, I installed a plug-in that allowed me to custom-control the meta that was displayed, and removed the register and log-in. What shows now on the blog page is only RSS Post and RSS Comments. Yet, yesterday and today, I received new user registration messages. How is that happening? Is it from an ‘old’ page in browser history that they have? Does that even work that way? Confused – but definitely wanting to eliminate anyone from registering on my site.

  • Because the link is just your website with wp-login.php appended. The only way you can stop new registrations is to use a registration plugin or to disable registrations by going to Administration > Settings > General > Membership: uncheck “Anyone can register”

AHA! I just went there and saw that it was indeed still clicked as “anyone can register”. I had forgotten about that little setting. THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH, tomontoast!! so appreciated.
