For some reason I am no longer able to edit some of the user roles that I created in WordPress. They show that they have certain capabilities, but when I click on them, I get the message “This user role is not editable”.

I even tried to copy the role to a new one, but it just creates a new role with no capabilities.

I’m not sure what is going on, I need to be able to edit the user roles that already have capabilities added to them.

    Hi @therealmoptop

Could you please share some screenshots on the issues?

    Thanks,

Here are some screenshots of the roles I have, the dropdown list where they are missing, and when I click on the capabilities number in roles.

I blurred out the role names for privacy reasons.

Could you please elaborate some more information?

It’s hard to pinpoint the issue just from that information. Usually this happens if user role with level is below the role they’re trying to edit.

Could you please answer the below question to narrow the possibilities?

    – When does the error show? Is it on save or click on the role?
    – While editing the role, what’s the role level of the affected role and what’s the role level of the user trying to edit the role? Role level can be seen after clicking edit on a role provided the lockout is not happening on the screen
    – Is the admin able to update affected role capabilities on the capability screen or is it trigger the same error?

    —– UPDATE —–

I believe I managed to fix the issue, I started a staging site to test this. I exported a copy of the settings, next I reset the roles back to default and then I imported the downloaded copy back into the plugin.

This seems to now allow me to edit the custom roles and the error is no longer showing up.

Note that I tried to restore from the backup to no avail, it kept the same errors. So the only way was to download the json file, reset and re-upload the json.

Do you have a private forum or email where I could post a video?

When I click on a custom role, I cannot edit it, it just goes to the new role screen. Default roles work fine.

I am logged in as Administrator. This is the error while logged in as Administrator.

If I click on the capabilities column under roles, that is where I get the permissions error.
