My business has an old website that we rarely use. I was going through all of our websites and updating the WordPress version and plugins. When I tried to log into the website in question, I received an error message that the username is not registered on the site.

I first went and created another user in the database, but that got the same error message.

I then went into cPanel and double checked the document root, then went and checked wpconfig to make sure I was editing the correct database. Everything seems in order.

The login page also doesn’t recognize the email address. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well, never mind. I took a closer look at the website and it looked like it had been edited by someone. That seemed strange, so I checked our domains and apparently my boss let the domain expire. So, I guess someone scooped up the domain, copied the front page of our old website and added a new page and a new contact form. I am utterly baffled.

I’m sorry your boss lost control of your domain name. IANAL, but since this thief is representing themselves as your business there might be some legal recourse. Not to regain the domain name, but to stop pretending to be your business.

The thief would probably be happy to sell the domain back to you for some absurd price. About the only other thing you can do now is register another similar domain name. If having a web site is important enough. You say it’s rarely used.

Sorry for your troubles, but since there’s nothing anyone here can do to help with domain theft I’m marking this topic as resolved. I hope things work out for you.
