when I install WP with either Fantastico or Softaculous,
I always make a username with lots of different symbols

    such as something like this:
    UN: R”3v^P+$yR.b?z
    PW: +7OK7_y!]v?U>s?Jf@Z
(neither of these are actual UN/PW – just
examples of what I usually do)

when I log in, it usually works just fine…

Another goofy thing…. if the symbols that
I use in setting up the UN/PW are not OK, why
not let me know BEFORE installation completes?

However, when I change username in phpMyAdmin,
I cannot use the majority of these symbols – which,
I believe – go a long way to providing greater
    security for my sites.

I think that, about the only punctuation
that may be used in phpMyAdmin are !.-

PLEASE, fix it so that complicated UN can be
    set up in phpMyAdmin

If there really is a major danger for WP sites, why
is it still so difficult to create a really difficult
    first line of defense

    thanks

You don’t need to make a complex username, since it’s going to be public anyway.

Also you don’t need to hit enter until you want to make a paragraph. We have line-wrap.

My username is never public…. it’s the first
thing I change …. the display name and my
    login name are different.

sorry, I don’t understand your comment about
    line wrap?

If I need to post my request elsewhere, please
    let me know…

    thanks

    My username is never public…

While the inclusion of certain allowed characters may complicate revealing the actual username (I’m thinking specifically of the primary admin account), I believe enumerating all usernames might still be relatively easy, even if your display name is different than your username. The trick might be to make sure that the default username simply doesn’t remain “admin” (or any overly simple variation thereof), and that password strength is appropriate.

[edit] ..and block username enumeration, if that’s what you’re worried about.

    My username is never public…

Do you make posts with it? Did you strip out every output of authorname from every possible location in your WP theme?

    It’s public.

sorry, I don’t understand your comment about
    line wrap?

You manually hit enter after ‘about’ – You don’t need to.

sorry, I don’t understand your comment about line wrap?

See? I removed the line break ?? Now it’s wrapped.

when you install WP with Fantastico,
    you put in your username/password
    AND, your “nickname”

the posts show up as the nickname-
    not as my username…

If i install with Softaculous, the
Username shows up….so, when I log
into dashboard, the first thing I do
is go to Edit Users and change the
name that shows up as posting…

I understand the there is line wrap
here…. and, I hate trying to read
posts that sprawl across the screen…

    I have a 24″ wide monitor and it’s often
    difficult to read posts….

    It is a habit

and, it’s far easier to read bite sized
    sentences…

and, none of this “answers” my “request”
to be able to easily use symbols in
username as well as password. It is what
I choose to use as a first line of defense.

If this is the wrong place to post this
request, I will appreciate knowing where
    I should move it to.

    Thanks Karen
