Are newly created accounts from Users > Add New still using the Authorizer plugin for login later? Are these considered “local” accounts and if so, what is the difference?

I need to create user accounts before users first log in so that I can enter custom profile information for each user. I would like to go ahead and create these accounts in order to make sure all the accounts are set up with the correct information instead of waiting for each user to log in, then be approved, then enter the information.

My tests suggest this isn’t a problem. Newly created users are appearing as approved users, and are using their LDAP credentials to login, but I’m confused as to what the difference is between adding a user normally (Users > Add New), letting a user be approved through Authorizer LDAP, and approving a user through the Authorizer access lists tab.

Yeah, Authorizer syncs any users added via Users > Add New to its approved list.

The “local user” thing is purely presentational, and doesn’t make a whole lot of sense anymore; I may remove it.

Your method is the best since you need to add usermeta. You could also use the Authorizer interface to do it: the “Approve” button has a dropdown that lets you create the WordPress account immediately (instead of waiting until the user logs in for the first time). However, it doesn’t let you skip sending the confirmation email to the user like you can in the Users > Add New interface, so you may want that.
