Users vs Subscribers vs Members?

    What exactly is the differences between user,subscriber/roles, and members. I tried searching all over www.ads-software.com, forums, support and such and just ended up more confused. I have Jetpack plugin installed and am using MultiSite. I understand conceptually that MultiSite is like wordpress.com (i.e 1 installation multiple sites/blogs) but with JetPack (I know I may need to goto their website for better support *Sorry* just trying to give an example and more info on my installation) they have a feature that lets visitors subscribe with an email and receive emails of new posts to the site (per site in MultiSite) and those that use this feature dont show up under Dashboard>Users but instead in under Jetpack>Subscriptions. So my question, what is the benefits of having visitors create logins on the site (i.e ‘Register’)…1 I can think of is tracking and stats purposes vs. having members or Subscribers via JetPack which doesnt seemto have as great of stats info, esp. since the JetPack subscribers can read posts in email and never come to the site thus I have no stats on their possible usage, and also vs. the different roles available to ‘Registered’ visitors who login (admin,contributor,etc).

    Sorry for the long post, but never found a complete understanding incl. pros/cons. Thanks so much.

  • Users = WordPress Users
    Members = Usually means paying members, in addition to being WP users, too.
    Subscribers = People that are subscribing to your site, nothing more, unless you mess with a Role Editor and give them posting rights, for example.

    Actually, your questions aren’t really Multisite related, so this may be in the wrong forum.

    Side note, I had some awesome BBQ Brisket Potato Skins today, and the ribs were phenomenal, too.

    Thanks, this answer was So Very Helpful, now regarding comments how does that fit in. Ex. I didnt want random folk posting comments and causing spam issues or such, and thus why I was inclined to only allow registered users be able to comment, but is there a way to allow maybe subscribers to comment on posts/pages?

    And for Subscribers is there any better way to get more stats on subscribers, i.e where they are going coming from, etc. Thanks Again!

    Yeah, once the site user becomes a subscriber, they can comments on posts and pages, but not create post/pages, or edit them for that matter…just comment. And they don’t even have to be a subscriber to comment, unless you want them too.

    In default WP? WP4RE is mostly right.

    user – someone with a user account on the network
    member – someone who has been added to a specific site on your network

    On Single Installs, user and member are synonymous.

    There is no such thing as a ‘paying’ member on a default WP install, be it Multisite or not.

    I have the same question as Louis Kraus. “Do subscribers to my website receive some kind of notice when I post something?”. The title ‘Subscriber’ implies some sort of feedback so if you get 100 posts, do the Subscribers receive a notification for each of them?
