• Hello

    I have installed the plug-in Contents Reveal with a view to trying to add in a desirable feature to the Primary Sidebar on my WordPress site. This sidebar has a number of sections include a Pages section which presents a contents list for my side. I would like to home in on the pages section and provide users with the option to reveal the contents list for this section or hide it. On reading the advice at https://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/7-essential-tips-for-using-shortcodes-in-wordpress/ , I carried out a trial by copy-pasting the shortcode [reveal heading=”<h2>%image% Some Blah Content Below</h2>” id=”id1″]Blah, blah, blah content here[reveal] provided by the plug-in author into the Content Box for the Primary Sidebar, so as at least to help manage the content of this sidebar as a whole. However, on viewing the result, I noted that the shortcode (and the title I included in the title box) just appeared at the bottom of my primary sidebar.

    I would appreciate advice on whether there is an alternative plug-in which could work to meet my above need.

    Many thanks!

    Hi @margmacd,

    This is not a limitation of the plugin but rather that WordPress does not support shortcodes, by default, in widgets. This plugin, therefore, is intended for use within the contents of posts and pages.

    However, all is not lost. If you add the following line of code to your functions.php file then it will activate shortcodes in widgets…

    add_filter('widget_text','do_shortcode');

    Hopefully, then, it should work as you require.

    Hello @dartiss

    Thanks for your kind reply. However, I had actually already copy-pasted the code recommended under Tip 4 at https://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/7-essential-tips-for-using-shortcodes-in-wordpress/
    into my functions.php file. This is the same code as in your tip.

    Which widget are you using to add the code to?

    @dartiss

    I am editing the text box for the Primary Sidebar widget.

    Should the code for functions.php be entered in a specific position to make clear to which sidebar the new functionality is to be applied?

    I added the new code as a separate line under the following code:

    add_filter( ‘wp_title’, ‘twentyfourteen_wp_title’, 10, 2 ); .

    (@dartiss)

    It applies to all sidebars and the positioning sounds fine. Could you provide me with a link to where you’ve set your sidebar up? Also, could you cut & paste to here your full functions.php file (assuming it’s not too large)?

    Hi @dartiss

    I don’t understand your first query but hopefully sending you the content of the functions.php file will be sufficient.

    Here it is:

    Thanks for the file – that looks fine, so I can rule out the positioning of that line of code ??

    My other question… you say you’ve tried this in a sidebar and it’s not working. Can you point me to a link (URL) where I can see it?

    Thread Starter margmacd

    (@margmacd)

    @dartiss, I think it would be more constructive if I could send you a screenshot of the Widget page with the sample code included, as this page is presumably the source of the problem.

    Hi @margmacd,

    Yes, a screenshot will be good too.
