Using Custom Field content in a mail tag…

I have a custom field in a custom post type (In this case, the field is named “start_date”. I would like to place the content of that field in emails generated by a form.

I tried using “[_post_start_date]” but that didn’t work.

I’m thinking that there may be a way, by editing the post template, to put that value into a hidden field within the form, then add it to the mail from there–but how best to do that eludes me.

Has anyone solved this problem, and can share their solution?
