Using Keywords

  • Hi,

    I have a new blog called TrailPotato and am just learning. I am looking for advice on using keywords. Is it as simple as thinking of how people do searches and then peppering my posts with those words? There most be more to it than that right? Do the categories and tags I use influences search?

    Names of posts = Website search

    Use tags, just dont create many, and dont use many in one post.

    Yes and No. You should create a list of keywords about your site, but your site also should include relevant content that includes these keywords. Some sites may use keywords improperly in an attempt to attract hits, but all major search engines also search the site for related content and these keywords. When that does not match, you can be removed from being listed or at least be on page 1001 of results.

    there is an excellent SEO plugin that I find very helpful – WordPress SEO by Yoast. You do need a keyword in mind, but once you have that, the plugin tests for various SEO techniques and gives suggestions on how to improve.

    Thanks for all the feedback. Very helpful stuff. Silly question. When you say to create a list of keywords that is just for me to reference as I’m writing correct? I assume you are not saying to literally post a list of keywords.

    Keyword are added to the source code in the <head> with a Meta Tag:

    This can be achieved with a plugin, a theme (not twentyeleven – odd, huh?) or by manually adding to the <head> section of header.php.

    Again, thank you. I recently added the Yoast SEO plug in and am starting to play with it some more… your link is very helpful!
