using search via hooks

I have a site with a custom set of filters on the BP members directory. The filters are applied to the args passed to bp_has_members(), and include search_terms.

I want to improve this search aspect because currently it’s not fuzzy enough, e.g. if a member’s name is John Peter Smith, searching for ‘John Smith’ won’t return that member in the results.

Does this plugin provide the ability to make the search fuzzy like this? And can that aspect be ‘plugged in’ to my existing custom filters / bp_has_members() args using hooks? I don’t need to use all the form building aspects of the plugin and it’s not clear if what I’m after is possible.
