using text instead of numbers in counter style

Is it possible to use text instead of numbers as the footnote counter? I’d like to have the reference as an anchor text in parenthesis (styled and aligned as normal <p>), yet keep all the rest of the plugin’s features. For example: ” The whiteness of the whale (Moby Dick, Ch 1, line 5) “
