Using the hook that you added

Tom,
I am trying to add something to the hook, but have a question.
Is the my_function_to_do_something_after_authentication hook only run when a user is authenticated from the external database or does it run every time someone logs in?
I am trying to set some session variables when a user logs in and thought this would be a good place to do it.
