• I went to upload the theme files to my wp-content/themes dir, and, lo, there is no such dir. (WP v1.2) Should I just create one? Or what???

    Actually, thats 1.2.2

You can, but it won’t work unless the theme itself calls the appropriate files from it. The *built-in* feature of wp-content/themes is for themes support in 1.5

So, then in order to use a new theme I need to replace the default files (index.php and wp-layout.css)?

Those are the two main templates in WordPress (circa 1.2). Some themes may hit wp-comments.php as well. But note that not all themes are made the same, so it’s possible for a 1.2 theme template to be broken up into separate files similar to how those designed for 1.5 will be. As should be the case for anything software-related, follow the directions for a particular theme.

Good advice to be sure. Unfortunatly, I don’t seem to be able to find any installation instructions for the template I want to use (trident). But the downloaded template folder only contains the two files plus a gif.

Overwrite index.php and wp-layout.css with the Trident ones, and place bg1.gif in the wp-images folder.

Yes, that’s what I was figuring. I just need to figure out how to get rid of the background so that the three cols fill the entire browser window. Edit the CSS I know but still learning that!
