VAGUE FAQ: If theme is responsive, do I need to enable “Mobile Device Support”?
-
Hello! The FAQ about the advanced setting “Mobile Device Support” is really vague and I am confused about whether I should be turning this setting on or not. It reads:
“How do I serve cached mobile pages to clients on small screens like phones and tablets?”
Your theme is probably responsive which means it resizes the page to suit whatever device is displaying the page. **(emphasis mine)**If it’s not responsive, you’ll have to use a separate mobile plugin to render a page formatted for those visitors. The following plugins have been tested but YMMV depending on mobile client. You’ll have to enable mobile browser support as well on the Advanced settings page.***
I read all of that second block together – meaning the “you’ll have to enable mobile browser support” only applies if the site is NOT already responsive and relies on an external plugin to make it responsive.
In the case of my sites I use responsive Genesis child themes where all the responsive rules are basic media queries in the CSS stylesheet for the theme – no extra plugins required. It shouldn’t need any extra caching rules that wouldn’t already apply to the site as a whole, which is why it makes more sense to me to keep it UN-checked.
Am I reading this correctly? Someone at my hosting company read the same paragraph the other way around, saying I SHOULD have that box checked.
Please clarify!
