Variable Product can’t be managed at Product Level

Prior to 3.0, I could manage inventory of variable products at the product level. The options are still there, but it will no longer allow a variable item to stay “in stock” if there is 0 qty when backorder is allowed. Which means the item disappears from my shop, so customers can’t backorder it.

If I manage inventory of each variation individually, they will stay in stock with 0 qty, but this doesn’t work for what I am selling. Because while I may have variations, I only have material to make one item, so I need to set the stock at the product level.

Simple products still remain “in stock” if there is a 0 qty and backorder available, as it should. It’s just variable products managed at the product level that don’t seem to be working any more.

Any ideas for a fix?
