Every so often, and we can’t identify why, our variable products all change from “no default” (which we want) to a default variation. This causes problems because our customers end up purchasing the wrong product (we sell codes and they end up purchasing codes for the wrong university) or can’t find the product they need (because the default school for example, doesn’t offer a print version of our title, so “print” isn’t a selectable option and they get frustrated). Any thoughts??

  • Hello,

our variable products all change from “no default” (which we want) to a default variation.

Does it change by itself even if you set it to “no default?” If so, the issue is likely caused by a conflict with your theme or another plugin. To determine what’s causing the issue, please temporarily switch your theme back to Storefront and disable all plugins except for WooCommerce. If that resolves the issue, then re-enable plugins one-by-one until you find the one that’s causing the conflict.

If you don’t want to test on your live site, you can create a staging site using a plugin called?WP Staging: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wp-staging/

You can find a more detailed explanation on how to do a conflict test here: https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/how-to-test-for-conflicts/

Thank you for the reply. Yes, it changes by itself, but only every few weeks or so — and we haven’t been able to identify what is causing it. They will all be set to no default for awhile, and then something will trigger them all to have defaults.

Unfortunately it’s not feasible to temporarily switch everything, since it can be weeks between it happening, and we cannot just turn off all of the features on our site that we use plugins for.

I’ll keep digging. Thanks again for your reply.

    Hi there,

Note that using a staging site, as my colleague mentioned previously, can help you to narrow down the cause of this issue and will not affect your live site’s functioning.

Also, if you are updating products via a CSV file, make sure that the value for the attribute’s default column is empty for these variable products.

    I hope it helps!

    Best,
