Variations do not load

I have an issue with my product variations
Since some time now, I cannot seem to edit the variations of my products. When I click on the variations tab, I see the loading wheel but it stops before the variations show up:

Nothing happens when I click on expand / collapse.

I tried selecting a default value, it doesn’t help.
I also tried creating new product with variants (assuming the old ones got corrupted somehow), so I see the variants after I created them, but after I save it and close it and get back to it later, the variations disappear.

I’m using the theme AVADA if that helps.

Any suggestion how to solve it?
