I am providing support to a client who is having issues with the Paypal Payments plugin, specifically getting it to work with WooCommerce Subscriptions. Although the API is properly connected and PayPal is usable for non-subscription payment types, it does not show up as a checkout option for subscription-based items.

We’ve determined this to be caused by the “Vault” setting not being enabled within the PayPal Payments plugin. This setting is greyed out and not checkable within the client’s settings. However, we have confirmed that Vaulting is enabled for the API / PayPal app being used with the WooCommerce installation. We have even gone as far as to create a new app / api key pair within PayPal and reconnect it to the site to ensure that the issue is not PayPal-side.

Can someone provide some assistance in figuring out why the Vault option would be greyed out if Vaulting is enabled within the PayPal API?

    Hi @robguru,

The Vaulting setting is disabled when the Pay Later messaging is active on any page: https://woocommerce.com/document/woocommerce-paypal-payments/#enable-vaulting
Both features are currently mutually exclusive and the settings UX around this will be improved in a future update.
Can you please make sure that the Pay Later messaging is disabled on all pages?
    Thanks!

    Kind regards,
    Niklas

    Thanks for the feedback!
There should be a notice displayed at the top of the settings page when either Vaulting or Pay Later messaging is active to inform about the limitation.
The initial hope was for PayPal to resolve the limitation swiftly after the feature was launched, but it seems it will take some more time, so there will be effort put into improving how the setting works.
Anyway, since it works for you now, I’ll mark this thread as resolved but feel free to reopen or create a new one if any other questions arise.

    Kind regards,
    Niklas
