I have been very satisfied with Duplicator in the past and needed to run again. Today I found a new version and updated, but before being able to use was required to download another plug-in – after downloading it turned out to be two.

Before updating any plug-in, I always check the changelog to avoid possible conflicts, but there was no mention of the requirement to download these two additional plug-ins, which I had never seen before. Moreover, MP Customizer Backups hasn’t been updated for over a year and produces a warning about compatibility with my current WP version and MP Core provides no details in the Dashboard and requires a search on the plug-in website to find out what it does. Looking in the directory it has a sizeable footprint with many directories and files.

I find this unacceptable without a prior explanation. Can you please explain why these extra plug-ins are necessary. My present inclination is to revert to the previous version.

  • Hey @malae,

I think you may have something wrong with your WP setup. In fact I have never heard of that happening before. The only changes that happened apart from what is mentioned in the change log is moving around of a few files and folders. It maybe that those other plugins are causing the issue. Have you tried to temporarily disable them? Duplicator should NEVER require you to download any other plugin or dependency. Its 100% stand-alone and always will be.

Have you tried installing the plugin on any other site? With every release we test the plugin on a wide range of server and sites and the issue you explained is new to me. If your unable to figure it out, feel free to submit a support (and refer to this thread) and we can have a closer look at it. My only assumption at the moment is that the other plugins may be having some kind of namespace conflict…

Let me know what you find~

    Hello Cory,

Thanks for your prompt response. I have found the cause of the problem.

Immediately after installing the new Duplicator version, I checked the settings and opened the packages page. At the very top of the Duplicator Packages page, there was a button styled like other parts of the page, with a notation to the effect that an additional setting was needed to complete the installation. In a moment of aberration, I clicked it. After this the two new plug-ins were installed.

Following my post and because of this behaviour, I decided to invesigate the plug-ins and they seemed legitimate, but unrelated to Duplicator, although one had Backups in the name. I then ran Wordfence and found several malware files had just been installed too. It took a while to clean these up, but all successfully removed.

I did not try to update Duplicator on my other sites, but ran security checks and all were clean. After receiving your reply I deleted the MP Core and MP Customizer Backups plugins and Duplicator runs normally. I then updated Duplicator on the other sites without any problems.

    Excellent! Thanks for the update.
