Updated to version 2.4.5 and lost all access limited to a white screen with this message:

“There has been a critical error on your website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions. Learn more about debugging in WordPress.”

Since Simple Comment Editing was the only plugin updated, it was easy to find. Disabled the plugin and everything was restored.

The error log was filled with:
[17-Feb-2020 03:16:04 UTC] PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘::’ (T_PAAMAYIM_NEKUDOTAYIM) in /home/path/public_html/wp-content/plugins/simple-comment-editing/includes/class-sce-output.php on line 17

@inndesign are you able to tell me which PHP version you are running? Usually, that error occurs if you’re running a very old PHP version.

I had guessed that detail would come into the equation.

We have a website running on PHP 5.6 due to an old unsupported membership system (Magic Members was abandoned October 2018) that requires it. We are in the process of replacing it on a staging site, but not yet ready to go live, which would all be running on PHP 7.2.

So based upon your response, the recent changes removed the plugins backward compatibility to work with PHP 5.6? It would be great if you left in some backward compatibilities for another few months, where there are other users who can’t simply flip over to 7.2+ yet.

Hmm, 5.6 should still be supported. I’ll check for a backfix.

It’s been over four days, still waiting on a response. Thanks.
