If it is important and you are unsure, then you should consider hiring someone to do it for you.

You will have to update in steps and those above will help you and most important is that you need to backup database and check everything is working before you update to next step

It should not be a problem. You should upgrade WordPress manually from 1 version to the other, instead of simply upgrading your installation to the latest version. From (www.ads-software.com/download/release-archive/) you can download different versions of WordPress. Upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2 etc until you get to the latest version. To manually upgrade WordPress, it is very straight forward as documented in https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Updating_WordPress.
