Version Confusion in Adventure Journal

2.0 is fake and seems to be distributed through Dreamhost. I’m looking into it.

Really?! Fake?!? What is up with that?!! – So you don’t think that 2.0 is a legit version from Contexture? That’s highly annoying. Please re-post here when you find out what’s going on with that. Thanks!

1.7.2 is the newest version I’ve officially released (this is the version that’s available on www.ads-software.com). There is a major update in the works but the “2.0” version floating around is absolutely not genuine.

Matt – I see that you are the original author of Adventure Journal. Kudos – it’s an excellent and fun theme, very crisp and clean. Thank you for your contribution.

I got a bit more info on this – it appears that the allegedly “later” theme is branded as: Adventure Journal 2.0-wpcom by Contexture International while the “earlier” version is branded as Adventure Journal 1.7.2 by Contexture International.

A casual look at this indicates that somehow someone in the WordPress community is creating/releasing these “wpcom” themes, which may be someone’s idea of improving on the theme. I’m not clear on what a wpcom theme is.

The only one showing up from an “Install Theme” from the WP dashboard is 1.7.2. I can’t say if this 2.0 impostor is pre-loaded in the Dreamhost base themes, but I can tell you that my latest install of 1.7.2 was from a Dreamhost WP install, as was the 2.0 version. Now, it’s not clear to me if 2.0 snuck in there as a theme upgrade or not.

Hope this helps – I’d like to know what, if any, improvements that 2.0 was supposed to make; it sure doesn’t appear to be an improvement.

It’s starting to make sense.

WordPress.com tweaks themes to make them work well with the service… and AJ has a lot of options that just wouldn’t be appropriate for WordPress.com, so those features get cut.

Now Dreamhost includes some “bonus features” with their WordPress one-click installs, including a ton of themes and plugins, and automatic WordPress updates. The problem here is that Dreamhost pulls their themes from WordPress.com and not WordPress.org – so when the latest round of automatic updates went out to Dreamhost sites, they upgraded everyone to the crippled WPCOM 2.0 version (which is really not appropriate for a self-hosted site).

I’ve asked for someone from the WordPress.com theme team to weigh in here.

It’s true that we work with Ian and the incredible Theme Team to include wpcom themes as part of initial installs, and have done so for some time now (although the ability to install without them is new).

The Theme Team have a method to mark certain themes as being incompatible or improper for .org hosting, and we in turn don’t install those themes.

I’ll note that neither themes nor plugins are touched as part of an auto-upgrade from us.

This means that any wpcom themes you have would only be upgraded if you do so within your WordPress panel, presuming there is a newer version on the .org repo.
