• Being an engineering student and avid programmer for many years I really can’t believe the unreliability and hacky solutions that WordPress has for all of its sporadic problems. Never in my life have I come across a piece of software that broke ITSELF and randomly at that. I have been having random problems including the admin half of the site rendering itself useless because there was something in the cache that led it be confused as to where the actual locations of the pages were. The only usable solution to that was clearing my cache. That sounds like a problem that could come back at anytime. NOT something a very well recognized and popular blogging platform like WordPress would offer. How it confused itself is beyond me. I have had the same plugins installed for months. One day it just changed something by itself without me ever knowing until there was a problem.

Another problem: I can’t upload a photo or when I do there is some sort of parsing error. No problem with my permissions but something in the platform tripping over itself. I instead had to go out on the internet to go patch up WordPress’ errors in the latest revision I had just cleanly installed.

Today I can’t update any of my blog posts. I have yet to find a solution to the problem that redirects me to a 404 on the front end when I try and update a post on the back end.

I always update my plugins and WordPress itself. Still random problems persist with basic functions of the site. To be honest I wish I could switch to another blogging platform. However I already have myself established with this platform and I don’t want to mess up the traffic I am getting with a bunch of 404’s. I understand it is a complicated project that has a large community involvement. But from the reading I’ve been doing these random problems have been going on for years. I just don’t understand how this can happen and for this long at that.

I’ve lost a lot of confidence in using WordPress for years to come. I used to love it and all of the wonderful features it has. Which, it has lots of. Now it has become a pain to just keep using which is quite sad. It is kind of like an old Alfa Romeo: you enjoy it a lot but the mechanical problems keep fighting back and letting you down.

  • Being a wp dev since the very beginning of WP, I can assure you that most of those problems can be sourced from one of the following: bad installation (rare), bad theme, bad plugins, server issue, miss-information or lack of knowledge on the users end.

    So… yeah.

In terms of security issues, etc. WP is a base platform (one of the most simple and versatile ones). Coding plugins, themes, etc. that actually then build upon that platform is what WP is all about, while still allowing a low point of entry for newbies.

    Good luck in your ventures.

Sorry you are running into difficulties. If you’d like some help getting them sorted, please post a request in the support forum so that someone may be able to assist you : ).

WordPress is a great free open source CMS, with a great community…

Sorry @murphy18241 that you are having problems. Hope you haven’t abandoned your efforts. Obviously you are frustrated. Please know that we’ve all been there and it can seem like a cold, lonely place. I’ve been a programmer since the mid 80’s and have seen it all. Are you old enough to remember DLL hell on Windows? I’ve had equally frustrating issues on other development platforms. So yes, I feel your pain.

@danielfonda offered you some simple but rock-solid advice. Many of my frustrating WP problems have been resolved by simply calming down and rethinking each of the components he listed. And yes, a very supportive community is available to you online, as @wpyogi suggested. Hopefully, someone there can offer you some immediate advice. (IMHO, I would refrain from thrashing WP in your posts. You’ll increase the likelihood of a reply.)

For the future check out, if you haven’t already, WordPress meetup groups in your area. Or go to a WordCamp. They are definitely worth traveling to. In addition to fabulous presentations by top WP talent, these events offer Happiness Bars where WP experts take the time to help you resolve your problems. Awesome!!!

Whatever you do, just keep the faith. You’ll be glad that you did.

    Best of luck!

I think @danielfonda nailed it, you must be having problems because of bad themes / plugins or your lack of knowledge.

When I started out with WP I built themes incorrectly and some plugins wouldn’t work.

All in all, WP is the best CMS IMO, as simple as a CMS can be with great core functionalities, and a super good base for 99% types of websites. A dream come true for making websites really.

If you are looking for a CMS to use then I’d suggest investing more time in WP before giving up.

@murphy18241, I think that you have been unlucky. A friend and I have both used WordPress for quite some time, and never had the problems that you have experienced.

Well, I did have a serious problem recently, but that was due to a silly mistake that I had made in my .htaccess file. That was my fault, not WordPress’s, and as soon as I located and fixed the error, everything worked again.
