Very high CPU usage when Woocommerce is enabled

  • Hello,
    We’ve experienced some high cpu usage for the last couple of days. But today its really bad and the site takes 2-3 minutes to load one page. After researching and trying out lots of potential fixes. I’ve found that when I disable the Woocommerce plugin the CPU usage drops to normal and the site behave completely fine after. I’ve tried disabling other plugins and activate only Woocommerce to check if there’s any plugin conflict but couldn’t find any. For this reason the site is mostly unusable and no orders are coming through.

    The theme, WordPress and the WooCommerce plugin are updated to the latest version as well.

    Hi @rafsan0606 –

    High CPU usage can be a bear to figure out! You’ve made a good start by doing plugin conflict testing. That definitely would have been my first suggestion.

    You might also check to see what your Awstats look like. Most hosts that use CPanel give you access to Awstats. You should hopefully be able to see which elements of your site are eating up resources. Personally, I’ve seen very large product images cause a big slowdown. If you haven’t already, you should ensure your images are optimized for web viewing and when you upload them, they should be relatively close (if not exact) to the size you want to display them in. If you have a great deal of images, you might also consider offloading those to a CDN.

    Next, do you have any custom functions set up for WooCommerce (in functions.php)? If so you might try testing without those functions to see if they may be causing issues.

    Finally, WooCommerce sites just naturally use more CPU, so it might be time to upgrade your hosting if you’re using shared hosting. ??

    Hopefully those ideas can get you started. Please let us know how it goes and we can keep trying to help troubleshoot this!

    Thanks a lot for your response. I’m going to go ahead and check the Awstats as you suggested above. Also, the products images on the site is really large in size. That might be causing it.
    I’ll take a look and try to mitigate these problems. Will give an update on the situation as soon as possible.

    Update on the situation:
    It was a bad bot attack on the site. Site was fixed by adding a plugin which prevents bad bots from crawling the site. Also, a pricing deals plugin was conflicting with woocommerce. It created massive sized error log on the cpanel storage. Which maxed out the storage limit on the hosting plan and was forcing the whole server to shutdown then eventually making the site down as well.
