    Hi there,

I’m working on site with lots of academic documents in french, imported from Word. That worked quite well in general except that I was getting some strange behavior with quotes like this one:
    https://cloudup.com/cQ9aDlE6jUr

I installed this plugin and mainly adjusted this particular setting for quotes:
    https://cloudup.com/c710S-GeVeJ

The result is now fine but I don’t well understand how this is possible as I still have spaces after/before quotation marks?

Wasn’t my setting supposed to remove those spaces?
    Or do I miss something?

    Thanks!

Hi @dsl225, there should be a thin non-breakable space before/after french guillemets. For compatibility reasons with older browsers, PHP-Typography (the formatting library used by wp-Typography) uses   instead. There is a setting to switch to the true narrow non-breaking space character, but I’ve just realized that this setting is currently not accessible from with wp-Typography.

Also, there may be a second thing going on: If your content already contains guillemets instead of straight quotes, those are NOT automatically transformed by wp-Typography. The plugin assumes that an “special” characters are there on purpose and does not try to change them.

    Many thanks for this.

I checked again and sometimes this thin non-breakable space before/after french guillemets is indeed there but sometimes not – which is really not very important.

I understand that this might be because of the documents that come from different sources but the result is really great and that’s what counts!

    Great job, thanks again!

@dsl225: Is there anything you’s like to know or can we close this issue? I’ll add an enhancement request on GitHub to add the setting for the narrow non-breaking space to wp-Typography.

No thanks, that’s just fine for me, no problem.
I marked this as resolved but my previous reply appeared here 3x that’s why I removed the content of the last 2.
