• Greetings,

I have three instances of WP on a VPS. They all began to slow down some six weeks ago. My main problem now: I can’t even modify a post with WP, as it tells me I have no internet connection, even though I could hit any other web page with no problems.

    1-2 minute page loads.

Turned off all my plugins (which are current) for no improvement.

Up’d my memory to 1-GB, along with plugins still-off for no improvement.

Moved the entire domain to my shared server with no improvement.

Yesterday found that all my widgets were moved but saved, and the default ones replaced them.

Hosting company keeps telling me there shows no problems with the server.

The only unknown is that most of my WP sites are using the same theme. Some have stopped, others are making it along. None of my sites get heavy traffic.

This is wild. Any help or directions would be extremely appreciated.

    Thanks.

  • Have you tried:

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

I switched to the Twenty Eleven theme with a GB of memory and plug-ins off, but nothing changes.

I’ll try resetting the plug-ins folder.

I was hoping I could avoid your third point. ??

Did you try resetting the plugins folder? If possible, use the Phpmyadmin method as I have come across a few really bad plugins in the past where this has been the only way of cutting them off.

Don’t worry about step 3 too much. You’re just uploading fresh core files. As long as you stay away from the wp-content folder & the root files I mentioned, your sites’ contents will be untouched.

I have not yet tried PHPMyAdmin.

    Where does one get that?

    Thank you !

Your hosts should be able to point you to a copy that’s installed on your server. Or to a similar database management tool. Try asking them about it.

    Thanks Diva !

Do themes need to be written in HTML5 now?

Nope. It’s purely up to the theme’s developer as to what DOCTYPE s/he uses. XHTML themes should still work just fine.
