• Hey guys,
I’m a total newbie, so would love your advice.

Does anyone know how to put video that is ipad/iphone compatible on a wordpress site?
Does this rely on a plugin, or the video format used?

I’m guessing youtube embeds would be compatible, but I’m wondering about self-hosted video as well.

    Appreciate the advice.
    Thanks! ??

I’m guessing youtube embeds would be [ipad/iphone] compatible.

Only if you use the new iFrame embed code and the visitor has signed up for YouTube’s HTML5 beta.

I’m wondering about self-hosted video as well.

Try this plugin and take note that your videos must be encoded as H.264 .m4v to work with Safari and mobile Safari on iPhones and iPads.

oh! So, even if i use the iframe embed code, the youtube videos wont work on iphone/ipad unless the visitor has signed up for html5 beta?

My friend has asked me to build them a WP site, with video that will work across platforms, so I’m just trying to figure out the best solution to offer them..

    thanks!

That’s correct. Currently, YouTube videos require the Flash plugin (which is not supported under iOS) to play, unless you’ve signed up for the HTML5 beta.

My friend has asked me to build them a WP site, with video that will work across platforms, so I’m just trying to figure out the best solution to offer them.

The plugin that I mentioned would definitely be the best option for that. And, if you provide the videos as both H.264 .m4v and Ogg Theora .ogv, they’ll play under all browsers except IE without requiring the Flash plugin.

    Thanks for that.

One more question – how about embedding vimeo?
I’ve heard that you have to be a PRO user to upload video that will work on iOS.. is that right? Would there be issues for the visitor too, as with youtube?

I’m just wondering, as my friend will be uploading videos to the website regularly, and I’m not sure how savvy he is with creating different video formats.

Thanks for your advice so far! I do appreciate it! ??

Actually, Vimeo is a step ahead of YouTube and only offers their HTML5-enabled iFrame embed code, so all Vimeo embedded videos will work on iOS devices.

    That’s great!
However, it will require my friend signs up for a PRO vimeo account, at $60 a year. Basic members can’t create videos that will work on vimeo’s html5 player…

Still, that sounds like his best option, unless he wants to create a bunch of video formats each time, using the degradable-html5-audio-and-video plugin….

    Thanks James!

Vimeo only uses the HTML5 player now. The only embed restriction on basic members is that their videos cannot be embed in high definition. The videos will still embed as standard definition with the HTML5 player.

Also, WP tends to mangle the Vimeo embed code, so try this plugin:

Update: Actually, it looks like a plus account is required to load your HTML5-embedded videos on mobile devices, which apparently includes the iPhone. More info:

Even though that’s straight from the company blog, I’ve never ran into any sort of restricted Vimeo embeds on my iPhone.
