    Unfortunately maxresdefault is not guaranteed by Google to exist, and we’ve found that to be increasingly true. Maxresdefault is definitely something we’d love for Google to guarantee, but it also involves other issues such as if the uploaded video itself is not HD, or if the thumbnail image is custom and low quality, etc. etc.

    Until then, we use the hqdefault, the next level of quality and it’s always guaranteed to exist. That way, your galleries don’t get any 404 thumbnails that looks like this:

    I find that if google do not provide maxresdefault, then go to video setting in youtube, set another thumb and wait to refresh video thumb. Then set old thumb and maxresdefult will be appear.
