Videos in Google Photos album not playing

  • Sometime not too long ago (not sure what update did it), videos are no longer playing and the slideshow controls are “confused” with their UI placement, for a Photonic library referencing Google Photos (shared with or by the user configured in Photonic). I was actually happy at first because not long ago some update made it possible to add a Google Photos image as a key image for a Post, which was silently failing for a long time.

    Photos show up fine in a slideshow (default gallery options otherwise, thumbnails on bottom), and it knows about the videos, it just doesn’t display them. Javascript console is chock full of 400 Bad Request responses for the videos (coming from https://video-downloads.googleusercontent.com).

    WordPress 6.5.3, Photonic plugin 3.10. I also have JetPack installed (currently 13.4.1 but that one updates frequently). Performance optimization is on but even turning it off (and clearing caches etc.) does not resolve this.

    Searched here and didn’t find anything that looked like it was the same thing, so apologies if this was already answered and I just didn’t find it.

    I believe this is more of a Google change than anything else. It would appear as though Google now prevents streaming of videos via the dv parameter, which had been working since the past 5 years.

    Unfortunately there is no easy fix for this, as it would require extensive troubleshooting and trial and error on my part.
