I’m using the Virtue theme (v3.3.4) and I want to add some images to the Flex slider. It works fine as long as I upload the images to my website first. However, the images are stored on my development server and I don’t want to have to create duplicates of them on the website. There is a “Slide Link” field in the slide setup section but it doesn’t seem to do anything. Here’s an example of a link I’m using:

    https://news.uci.edu/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/DSC_0634_lr-768×512.jpg

When pasted into a browser URL box, it works fine. When I upload the picture to my website and add it from the media library it works fine as well. But when I put the URL in the Slide Link field in the slide setup form, I get nothing in the slider display. There is a slot for the image in the slider rotation but the screen is blank.

Can anybody tell me what I’m missing?

    Thanks,
    Eric…

    Hey,
The slide link field is for linking your images. For example, if you wanted one of your slides to link to your blog or to an external link. You need to upload your image in order for it to display, but you should be able to upload it right from theme options > home slider settings. I tested this with your image and had no issue.
    Hope this is helpful!

    Hannah:

Thanks for the reply. However, I’m trying link to the images without uploading them at all. My Web hosting service charges too much for storage so I’m running the website there but I’d like to store images and other resources in places other than the website. I can embed links to external images in my posts and pages, and that works fine. But apparently the slider requires that the images be uploaded.

A question on your response: If the Slide Link field is for linking the image to another resource then what is the “URL” field for?

    Thanks again for the help,
    Eric…

I’ll have the developer confirm, but I believe your images have to be uploaded in order for them to display in a slider.
The url field is your image url. But the image has to actually be uploaded, you can’t just paste the image url there.

    Hey,
You do have to upload the images, the url is to help display information and spot issues but you have to upload. This is because the slider outputs using the image ID and srcset information so the images are able to follow responsive image techniques.

It’s possible a plugin might be able to do what you want, have you tired: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/smart-slider-3/

That’s kinda what I thought. I think I’ll just bite the bullet and upload the images. I’d hate to load up another plugin just because I’m too cheap to pay a few bucks a year to store 15 images.

Thanks for all the help and advice.
    Eric…
