Virtue Theme very slow page load

Have just started using the virtue theme and the pages load very slowly. I have a m1.medium machine and no users.
Started to Simple Debug this and turns out that the culprit is the ‘gettext’ calls within the virtue them. When I switch theme to the default(pages load fine).

Any help is appreciated.
