visitor’s cart not working

I’m having trouble with visitors (not logged in) that has an elusive solution. Visitors seem to at times share and co mingle contents of the cart; the front page sometimes has issues, but the /cart page in particular seems to share the data tossed into the cart by other users.

The site has worked fine for a couple of years, but recent upgrades gave it the squirrely behavior. I’ve made a clean install of WP & WC (but with a persisted database), disabled all caching (it goes through nginx), and tried flushing expired transients/sessions/counts/etc. from WC.) From what I’ve been able to gather it might (or not :)) be something about woocommerce_sessions, but I’m not sure how the implementation works and I don’t want to have to start climbing through a debugger to figure this all out (PHP isn’t my first language of choice…), so I’m hoping this might be enough to sound familiar to someone.

If anyone had an idea or pointers to a solution I’d be all ears/eyes!

Status report below; I’ve also put in WP’s Twenty sixteen instead of avada, but it displayed the same behavior, so I switched it back for aesthetics while I’m trying to figure this out.

I’m using standard WC shortcodes on my account, checkout, cart, and everywhere else I know about.

The checkout page is set in WooCommerce->Settings->Checkout->Checkout Pages.
