Upgrading to WordPress 2.8 (from 2.7+) i have lost the visual editor. No visual icons are showing and it is impossible to write in the edit box.

My wordpress dashboard is a mix of french and english language since version 2.5. I never had problem before version 2.8.

    What can be wrong?
    Any idea???

    THANKS to help me.

  • Why is this marked Resolved? I have tried the fixes and none have solved the problem

I had the same exact problem using Firefox 3.0.11 and had a mini heart attack. I cleared my private data and cache and it is working fine now. Phew!

Because the OP’s (volvoxsoft) problem was resolved.

Moderator: do I need to start a new issue? I am still haveing the problem and have tried the fixes:
In addition to the visual editor not working, neither do drop down box arrows in the dashboard.
    I have reloaded 2.8,
reloaded FF, IE and Chrome, and followed previous tips. nothing has worked.

@andrewd300 thank four your solution, my problem was solved

I started a new thread about this since I haven’t been able to resolve it either, see:
    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/279476?replies=1#post-1101643

I resolved my issue with the visual editor using @andreD300 steps plus a few more that solved my problem.

    1. In WP admin panel Tools > Upgrade > Reinstall
    2. In Firefox Tools > Clear Private Data
    3. In WP admin panel Settings > WP super cache > Delete cache
    4. Log out
    5. log back in

Initially when I logged back in it looked like the problem was not solved. When I switched from html to visual mode the editor was back.I hope this helps.

Resolved for me finally – it was Google Gears in Firefox. BUT, disabling it from the top Tools bar didn’t do it because I use the All-in-One Sidebar add-on. I had to:

    1. Open the Sidebar
    2. Click on the installed extensions and themes icon
    3. Click on Google Gears
    4. Click on Disable

After that, the TinyMCE showed up on the visual editor.

I think we’re all having the same problems – but since the results of fixes vary – perhaps they’re occurring for slightly different reasons.

I installed 2.8 in a sandbox site – worked fine. But I used my host’s (BlueHost installation/upgrade app – Simple Scripts – to do it. Worked fine – so I went ahead – and without thinking that there might be a difference – installed 2.8 via WPAU (WordPress Automatic Upgrade) – a fantastic plugin – which has never caused me any problems – and saved me lots of time.

The WPAU install is the one where I had the loss of visual editors. The fix was to reinstall 2.7.1 over the 2.8 install, and then upgrade via Simple Scripts.

My question – is it possible that all of the simultaneous downloads of WordPress 2.8 via WPAU – all hitting the same servers and/or mirror sites – caused some of the downloads to be incomplete?

Just a thought – perhaps it explains why it happened to some people and not others in similar/identical circumstances.

I also used WPAU to upgrade. I had issues with the visual editor, though for me, it seems that WPAU did not cause the issues, but rather the ‘Use Google Libraries’ script. It reports the actual version of WP, which is most likely the cause of the problems. They probably weren’t ready for 2.8 and didn’t have the libraries out or something.

I don’t know if that will fix it for everyone, but I recommend you try to disable that if you have it installed.

Firefox 3.0.11/WP 2.8 here – i’ve tried it in IE8 too, and faced the same issue. And although there are no problems in Chrome – I don’t use it as my main browser anymore.

In FF/IE: I’ve found that hitting CTRL+F5 whilst on the Edit Post page makes the toolbar re-appear, as the whole re-upgrade/clear cache process didn’t work for me.

I hope this gets sorted quick-ish, as this is a basic irritation for a supposed “final” version.

    ??

I have the visual editor intact but I have a related issue with the editor in that sometimes, not all the time, my content will vanish. Simply by clicking on “edit” from my home page or going to the edit window from admin I stand the risk of losing all the content in a post.

I can restore from the saved revisions at the bottom of the admin-post edit page but I ahve never had this problem before 2.8 and I do not seem to see other people having this problem.

I have been disabling plugins to see if that is the problem. Am using Mozilla 3.1 I think and Flock browser. I may try Opera or Chrome after I am finished doing some tests. Right now have disabled Hyper Cache and and using WP Cache (prefer Hyer) to see if that is the issue. Had with the DB Cache plugin as well earlier.

Anyone having this issue or am I alone here?

    Bill

My visual editor wasn’t working for me after installing 2.8 and most of the solutions above weren’t working for me.

However, the following (finally) did the trick.

    1. Disable ALL your plugins.

    2. In the WP Dashboard: Tools > Upgrade > Re-install Automatically

Refresh your browser and the visual editor should reappear.

When I tried the automatic re-install before my plugins were on and I think this was the problem.

Judging from the amount of problems people are posting about upgrading to WordPress 2.8 this may not work for everyone but could be the solution that works for you.

Andrew D300’s fix worked for me as well.

    Thanks, guys! – That’s quite a relief!

For crying out load WordPress, sort this out!!
