After 4.4 upgrade the Visual editor on my website does not work. I turned off all plugins, which did not work. I changed the theme to Twenty Fifteen, that didn’t help either.

When I go to a post or a page, I just get a blank window where the visual editor is supposed to be. There are no buttons and there is no text in the window. The

“Disable the visual editor when writing” is unchecked. The tabs for “Visual” and “Text” are there, but they don’t work. You can’t switch to “Text” and edit in html.

HOWEVER: when I check “Disable the visual editor when writing” in my user profile, I am able to edit posts in the html text editor.

Is there a way to fix this? I would like to be able to use the Visual Editor.

    Hi,

It sounds like you are experiencing the issue described here https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/read-this-first-wordpress-44-master-list?replies=6&view=all#post-7759534 regarding antivirus software incorrectly blocking our JavaScript

Thanks for your response, but I am unsure what you’re suggesting that I do. The info that you sent me to says that I should just ignore scanners that report malware, but doesn’t offer a solution.

I turned off all the plugins and that didn’t change anything. I have the free Sucuri plugin, but when I turned it off it didn’t change the visual editor. Wouldn’t turning off every plugin resolve the issue if anti-virus software was blocking the Javascript?

I also replaced the wp-includes/js/tinymce folder, but that didn’t change anything, either.

    Please advise!

If it helps, if you select the text in the visual editor blank box, the text becomes highlighted. It is there, it just displays as white, in the courier font.

See Using Your Browser to Diagnose JavaScript Errors to figure out what exactly the javascript errors are when the visual editor is enabled.

@sminker The thread I linked you to recommends trying to disable your antivirus protection when making post edits until, if it starts working at that point you know that it’s a false positive from your antivirus causing the issues and you should disable it when making/editing a post until your antivirus vendor fixes their definitions.

Do let us know if that works for you ??

@marius — I disabled it and I still can’t use the Visual Editor. Is there any other solution?

@songdogtech – I could do that, but how am I supposed to know what the errors mean? I am not a programmer, I am a designer. Maybe I should just go back to the previous version of WordPress?

I just spoke to Midphase, my web host to see if they have any antivirus software running on the server that might be blocking the javascript. They are looking into it right now.

No need to go to a backup yet. Use https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors and post the errors here.

Here is an update on what happened with this issue.

I maintain another website on Midphase’s servers. When I checked that site, it was experiencing the same exact issue.

I migrated the smaller of the two sites into a test directory on Bluehost, and the issue disappeared, confirming my suspicion that this issue was caused by something that happened on the Midphase server.

I contacted the web host tech support, and they diagnosed the issue and fixed it on the server side. It took a while, but one of the sites is back to normal. I’m still waiting on the other.

    Thanks for your help.

In conclusion, it turns out that the issue had nothing to do with the WordPress upgrade, plugins or themes. The issue was on the server side.

Do you know what the issue was?

If you do it might help others in the future ??
