Can’t type anything in the visual editor after an update to 4.2.4. I can look at text editor, enter things in, and they show on the front end. But I don’t even get a cursor with the visual editor. I also don’t have any of the styling buttons available in the visual editor.

    I did the following things:
    – Deactivated all plugins.
    – Switched theme to an up to date default theme.
    – Reactivated all plugins.
    – Tried different browsers.
    – Tried different computers.
    – Cleared browser cache.
    – Cleared server cache.
    – Cleared Cloudflare cache.
    – Turned off Cloudflare altogether.

None of these by itself or in conjunctions with others did one bit of difference.

My webhost has changed nothing in the environment.

I turned on script debugging. Didn’t fix anything.

I looked at errors through console and this is what I’m getting:

    “JQMIGRATE: Logging is active” jquery-migrate.js:1:141
“JQMIGRATE: jQuery.fn.attr(‘value’) no longer gets properties” jquery-migrate.js:3:258
    console.trace(): jquery-migrate.js:3

    Also thisL

    TypeError: document.getElementById(…) is null overlay.js:7333:4

What to do with this info, I don’t know! I’m at a loss. Any idea how to resolve?

  • Do you notice any JavaScript errors on your debugging console? https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors

    Hi Rajesh,

The only info I get in the console are the ones I quoted in my original post.

my site has the same problem. Deactivating plugins is not solving the problem. It’s not showing any tool, I can’t switch from visual to text…the text is white, it’s there but i can’t edit if I want, and I can’t add new text in new posts or page.

We have the same issue and don’t know what the heck to do.

Our website is https://www.lol-la.com but the backend of the website through WordPress is no longer working…not showing visuals, can’t edit anything, can’t anything.

Do you guys think WordPress will notice their glitch based on latest updates they had?

I hope they will do something fast. I just checked my other website that is using only few plugins and different theme and there is the same problem with visual editor. Of all the buttons I can only see “Add media file”. Visual is not switching to text and I tried to write. No cursor showing me it’s possible to write but it is, only the letters remain white so they are invisible. And every time I try update plugins I get some error and it’s not possible to update the plugins or the themes. I tried to reupdate WordPress, it didn’t even tried to process it.

First, for everyone here, please try deactivating all plugins. If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the default theme for your version of WordPress to rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

I know you may not think this is a solution, but I’d like to point out that there are only 3 of you in this thread with this problem, and WordPress 4.2.4 has currently been downloaded over 46 million times, so simply suggesting that it must be an issue in WordPress itself really won’t solve anything.

Basically, something is conflicting with WordPress’s normal operation, and we need to find out what that is.

If you still have the same problem while using the Twenty Fifteen theme with *no* plugins enabled, try downloading WordPress again and delete then replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings. Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

If that made no difference either, please let us know what JavaScript errors you see at the editor: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors

Ok, as we wrote before switching off the plugins didn’t solved the problem. Switching to the default theme dosen’t solve the problem either. And I don’t admin only one website but more and they all have the same issue. Plus, WordPress is being updating automaticly so many people don’t check if not necessary, especialy while front end still seem to running ok.
I tried to download wordpress again once before last night and it didn’t even tried to proceess so last option now is do everyhing manualy. I hope it will work. Thanks for the advices.
But once again plugins are not the issue this time.

Excellent, let us know how the reinstall goes, and if that doesn’t work, let us know what JavaScript errors you’re seeing.

Had the same issue with one of my sites and updating the WP files fixed it.

    Excellent, thanks for confirming!

In that case, it’s entirely possible that one of the updated files was initially corrupted during transfer to your site, expansion of the archive, or just the general copy phase.

Same problem fixed in an easier way. It’s seems that an option in an update puts the text editor by default.

Just go in “user”, select your profile, than “modify” and uncheck the option that put the text editor by default (don’t know the english name but it’s the first one at the top of the page… It must be “Disable the visual editor to write” or something)…

Hm, nothing in the core update changes that option, but maybe a conflict with a plugin made it go wonky.

    Thanks for sharing your solution!

Maybe… Hope it works for the others and thanks for your work too ??

Hiya, I’m having exactly the same problem after the 4.2.4 update. I have tried all of the solutions written above and haven’t had any joy fixing it.

After looking at the user settings to ensure the box mentioned above was unchecked and re-downloading and copying the wordpress install files, I turned on script debugger and that has temporally fixed the issue. However, when I turn debugger off the issue comes back again. As I’m new to all of this I have no idea where to go from here…

These are the issues the debugger pulled up:
    wp-tinymce.php:1
    post.php:2055
    wp-langs-en.js:235
    post.php:2050

Any help would be gratefully received!

    Moderator James Huff

    (@macmanx)

Those are locations of the issues. What are the errors/warnings themselves in the debugger?
