So I recently logged into my wordpress install and found that I couldn’t switch between HTML and Visual modes in the editor.

    I’ve deactivated my plugins…didn’t work.
I changed the folder with all my plugin to plugin.hold and made new plugin folder…didn’t work.
    I installed a fresh copy of 2.7.1 wp-admin, wp-include, and the root files (didn’t touch my wp-config files)…didn’t work.

I don’t know what I should do. Any help would be greatly apprciiated.

Go to Your User Profile in the backend, near the top of the page you’ll find the checkbox which disables/enables Visual Mode for Write panel

    Nope all unchecked.

Also when I do check “disable visual editor” and go to add new post both disappear. When I uncheck it it’s back but stuck in HTML mode.

The only thing I see out of the ordinary is that the panel for publishing now ask’s to “stick this post on the front page”

By default the panel is never expanded and always collapsed. Even when writing a new post.

Ok, then I’d check with conflict in either advanced theme of plugins.
    1. change to default theme and see if visual editor is enabled. then go back to your theme of choice and check if visual editor is working now. if that doesn’t work ..
    2. disable plugins and see if visual editor is working, then enable one by one to see which plugin is the culprit.

    What I’ve tried so far…
I first went into wordpress and just deactivated all the plugins using the tool bar.
    result: still no visual editor

I created a new plugins folder in wp-content and changed the name of my old plugin folder to “plugin.hold”
    result: still no visual editor

I’ve opened it in FF, IE, Safari, Chrome and cleared the cache and cookies in each browser
    result: still no visual editor

I went an downloaded new files of 2.7.1 and replaced the ones i currently had. Changing almost everything but wp-content and wp-config files.
    result: still no visual editor

I also just realized taking a look at my screenshot. I’m not getting any other tools in HTML mode (such as uploading media etc)

Upgraded to 2.8.6 problem solved…I guess. I can now switch between the two but I don’t have the rich text formating.

This is the 2nd time we’ve had either conflict or a possible hack. Any advice on securing wordpress would be great.

Plus, upgrading was a great idea. I didn’t notice that you were still on version 2.7.1 ??

So I’m pretty much stumped. No matter what direction I takesomething is causing the visual editor to not work in both 2.7.1 (revereted back to it because at least I can edit HTML) and 2.8.6 (could see the tools for HTML editing for a bit then they disappared and text was white on white)

I’ve tried downloading and updating the files in TinyMCE and that hasn’t worked.

I’ve deactivated and removed all my plugins at some level or another and that hasn’t worked.

I’ve tried adding a line of code into the wp-config file and that hasn’t worked.

I am at a complete stand still. HELP!

I am having the same problem ever since I upgraded to 2.8.6. I have tried pretty much every remedy I have found but nothing is working!

    Site URL?

I’ve got the same problem, I upgraded, did all of the above, still not working. I even installed a secondary editor and that didn’t fix it either. I have to have my visual editor to do the work I need to do and right now, I’m stuck.
