• I’m using Aspen, otherwise my problem is the same as Monica’s. The editor is stuck on Text now, but worked intermittently after I deactivated plugins. Then when it quit working I tried it again with no result. Deactivating different plugins would get it to work for awhile. Later I deactivated all of the plugins and still not working. It is still showing the add media button with no plugins activated. Some pages it will work and some not. I’ve tried clearing the cache and restarting everything with no luck. This just started yesterday and today. I upgraded to 4.0.1 several weeks ago.

Update: I just went back and activated all of my plugins and it started working normally. Let’s see how long this lasts…

update again: back to not working. In fact most of the links are not working including “help” button. I have deactivated all the plugins again and it is still showing the add media button with no result when I click on it.

So try deactivating ALL plugins and switching to a default theme (twentyfourteen) – does it work then?

Will I lose my customization? Such as columns that are available in Aspen? I will have to do it later as I do not have time to correct it if something goes wrong now.

I just de activated all the plugins and switched to 2014 theme. Same result–no visual editor and many of the links were unavailable.

Okay, so what you’ll need to do now is download a new copy of WP to your local computer and then using FTP replace all files and folders EXCEPT wp-config and wp-content – and delete the old copies before uploading the new ones.

OK. I did that and still no visual editor. “Add media” button and “help” link doesn’t work either. I exported the content to a file. Should I try a complete new install and then import the file? Will 4.1 be of use?

Here is a list of the plugins I have activated right now:

    Aspen Shortcodes and Widgets
    Aspen Theme Extras
    Jetpack by WordPress.com
    Redux Framework
    RPS Image Gallery
    WP Edit

Why are they activated? You need to get everything back to the most basic install first- no plugins and a default theme (twentyfourteen). Do you still have the same issues then?

    Did you reinstall WP?

I completed all that already with no change. I reinstalled WP as you told me to, keeping the wp-config file and WP-content folder. I signed into the dashboard and it was still not working. I tried activating some of the plugins to see if that would work (see above when I reactivated them all, and that did not help so I deactivated all of them again and tried the 2014 theme, again, and it still didn’t work. I tried activating the plugins in 2014 and it did not work. I again deactivated them , went back to Aspen, and then reactivated them again. The site is working with what I have up there but I just cannot make any changes with visual editor and the buttons I indicated before. By reactivating the plugins at least the web site is showing the pages as I had them before, rather than a disorganized mess, while I am not busy elsewhere.

Where is your site hosted – given what you have done already and that the problem is intermittent, you may want to talk to your hosts to see if they can see anything.

You could also enable debug to see if any errors show up:

Before I reinstalled WP, I exported the content to a file using the tools on the dashboard. Should I try a complete new install and then import the file? Should I try upgrading to 4.1?

Oh one, other thing, see if you get any JavaScript errors when you try to use those buttons –

I was using IE11 with the problem occurring. I did the debug and here are the errors I got.
DOM7011: The code on this page disabled back and forward caching. For more information, see: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=291337
    File: post.php
    HTML1300: Navigation occurred.

    SCRIPT5009: ‘_’ is undefined

I tried Firefox and the first time it ran the Visual editor worked, but when I tried to add new page it would not work. I went back to the original page that worked and it no longer worked. In Firefox 34 it does not have an “error console”. What do I use to find the errors?

I did delete WP Edit and reload it with no help also.
