It’s not missing, the editor has changed. You don’t need the scroll bar anymore, just scroll down the page using your mouse wheel or however you prefer to scroll the page. The toolbar at the top of the editor will stay on the screen.

I for one do need the scroll bar since it saved a lot of time in creating the tags and selecting categories, etc. Without that scrollbar it is taking a lot longer.

The page itself still has a scroll bar, and you can still scroll to edit tags and categories and such. But the editor window itself now expands to fill the height of the page.

This is a pain because if I want to scroll up to see or edit something at the top I have to scroll all the editor text back up, then I have to scroll the page and all the editor text back down again to get back to what I was editing. It redundantly scrolls both the editor and page when I only want to either scroll the page or the editor.

This is not better, it’s making it more difficult and I need some way to change it back as one install of 3.9.2 has the editor scrollbar while a newer install on another server running the same version doesn’t have the scrollbar and I need to know how to reactivate it.

If you really don’t prefer it, then click the “Screen Options” button on the top right of the screen, then select the checkbox to turn off the auto-resizing.

Oh, hallelujah; thank you! I hate the new format, too, and was putting off upgrading any of my other sites because of it.

Not only is it just unwieldy in general, if you’re working on an extra-wide page it’s a nightmare. I kept having to scroll ALLLLLL the way down the page to get to the horizontal scrollbar, scroll left or right, scroll ALLLLL the way back up and make an edit, and repeat ad nauseum. I was ready to hit somebody.

I’m EXREMELY thankful to have my functionality back!

The auto-resizing prevents us from being able to scroll to the end of the content in the visual editor. Can I disable it for all users automatically?

Was searching for this and ended up here. Here’s the fix, from another thread:

The new scrolling is a ‘feature’ of WP 4.0. Try turning it off by clicking on ‘Screen Options’ in the upper right of the edit screen and unchecking the box for ‘Expand the editor to match the window height.’

If you write long articles like we do, then this feature is more of an annoyance, but fortunately it can be disabled.

BRING THE SCROLL-BAR BACK……. THAT WAS A HORRIBLE AND LOW-QUALITY UPDATE. WRITERS NEED THE SCROLLBAR.

It really needs a way of being disabled for all users globally. It’s annoying to explain to every individual how to disable it.

Trying to edit a large table in the Visual tab without a horizontal scrollbar is hilariously painful. I have to scroll to the bottom of the Post to find the scrollbar, then scroll horizontally, then scroll back up the page and hope I’m seeing the correct cells. This editor overhaul was a nice attempt, but it kills productivity in certain cases. I appreciate the option for being able to turn this feature off. Unfortunately, the Distraction Free Writing feature is even worse! Why does it crop my Page to a small rectangle that looks sized for printouts?

My issue is in Mozilla Firefox 32.0.5 where the menu bar hoovers, which makes the drop-down tools unusable unless the dropdowns are in their original position (you’re fully scrolled to the top of the page).

Just a reminder that their are TWO separate scrolling systems now. One inside the editor pane, and one for the entire page. The latter you will find off to the far right edge of the page. As of version 4, there is no longer a need to scroll inside the editor pane to access the top and bottom of the window.
