When someone signs up to volunteer they are being unsubscribed from Mailchimp.

In the Users profile, the “Mailchimp subscribe” checkbox is being unchecked and then when it syncs with Mailchimp they are being unsubscribed from our list.

Only consistent thing I see between all users that this has happened to is it coincides with when they have signed up for a volunteer opportunity.

How can I prevent this from happening?
    Thanks!
    ~Heather

I’m sorry you’re dealing with that Heather and I’m happy to help you figure out what’s going on. Can you answer a few questions for us:

    1. What plugin are you using to handle your website’s integration with Mailchimp? That will help us determine if there’s a conflict.
    2. Have you had a chance to test the issue directly? For example, by creating a user and subscriping them in Mailchimp, then signing up for a volunteer opportunity to see if they are then unsubscribed.
    3. Just to confirm, are you using the most updated versions of WordPress and our volunteer management plugin?

That should be enough to help us look into things on our end.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

All plugins say they are up to date (no updates pending).

    I am using:
    WordPress (Current version: 6.0.2)
MC4WP: Mailchimp for WordPress (Version 4.8.10)
Wired Impact Volunteer Management (Version 1.4.8)

Someone indicated that WooCommerce could be affecting it, but many of the affected users are not in the WooCommerce customer database. But just in case…
    WooCommerce (Version 7.0.0)

My husband is one of the affected users. He received emails on Oct 1, but did not on October 12. The only interaction he had with the website was signing up for a volunteer opportunity on October 7. He is not in the WooCommerce customer database.

After I resubscribed everyone yesterday we had a few more people who signed up for volunteer opps, and when I checked their WordPress user profile their Mailchimp Subscribe button was now unchecked.

    Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the extra details Heather. Our first goal in any situation like this is to replicate the problem. We actually set up a testing website today specifically for this purpose, but we’re not able to use the MC4WP: Mailchimp for WordPress plugin since we don’t have a Mailchimp account within our company. That made it difficult to play around with different scenarios so we could figure out what’s going on.

We did spend some time going through our code to look for anything that might be accidentally adjusting other user settings. It’s definitely possible that’s happening, but we didn’t find anything during our review.

At this point I’d recommend one of two steps:

    1. If you’d like us to spend more time testing, we’ll need a Mailchimp API key we can use. We understand if you feel uncomfortable sharing one, but if you’d like to go this route, please send it our way by filling out the form at https://secure.wiredimpact.com/.
    2. The other option is to reach out to the support team for MC4WP: Mailchimp for WordPress to check if they have seen a situation like this before. It could be easier for them to troubleshoot since our plugin doesn’t interact with any third-party tools like Mailchimp.

Let us know what you think and if we don’t talk to you, have a great weekend.

Thanks for sending over the Mailchimp API key Heather.

I know you mentioned you discussed with Mailchimp support. Did you have a chance to reach out to the support team for MC4WP: Mailchimp for WordPress? I’d love to know if they’ve seen anything like this before. That might help point us in the right direction.

I ended up deleting the MC4WP plugin yesterday just for ___ & giggles…. and that seems to have fixed it. I’m not sure what it was doing to screw things up, but I’m sending them a message too. Will let you know if we run into any further issues.

That approach sounds good Heather. We’ll wait to hear from you. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
