voting for popular posts

I think I may have used the wrong terminology in a similar post, so sorry if this is redundant.

What I would like to do is allow users to vote for popular posts. Then the posts would be displayed in the order of the most highly ranked. In other words the post that gets the most or highest votes would end up at the top of the page.

One kind member suggested “vote it up” but I am a bit wary of that plug-in because of negative things written about it.
